Biography
Rosa Young, born in South Korea, is a British visual artist, curator and educator based in London.
She completed her Foundation at Chelsea College of Art, BA (Hons) at Camberwell College of Arts, and MA in Drawing at Wimbledon School of Art, developing a multidisciplinary practice spanning drawing, painting, mixed media, installation and performance.
Her long-standing artistic practice explores the relationship between visual art and Western classical music. Drawing on her experience as a pianist and classical guitarist, she investigates how rhythm, tension, silence, memory and the emotional resonance of music can be translated into visual form. This continuing body of work, developed over several decades, is known as Image of Music.
Alongside her artistic practice, Rosa Young has devoted over 30 years to creative education, curatorial work and cultural projects, bringing together art, music and learning through DUO ART & MUSIC and Newdays Gallery London.
She continues to live and work in London, developing Image of Music through both established and experimental forms.
Image of Music
Image of Music begins with the experience of music rather than its illustration.
The work explores both the structures within music and what emerges through experiencing it - through listening, performing and remembering. Rhythm, repetition, interval and notation are considered alongside movement, shifting sensations and emotional resonance, as well as the spaces shaped by silence.
Rather than translating music literally into colour or form, Rosa Young explores how its structures and lived experience can be transformed, reconfigured and allowed to resonate in visual form.
